ABOUT | |||||
The Media is a recurring webpaper covering alternative music, culture, activism, and DIY communities, with an emphasis on making space for stories and voices overlooked in the mainstream media. The project was launched in May of 2013 by two former employees of The Boston Phoenix, after the historically subversive newspaper shut down. The Media is inspired by the spirit of alt-weeklies like The Phoenix, aiming to bridge the gap between the underground presses and more accessible platforms. Our contributors are often embedded in the communities they cover, but skeptical enough to keep the writing balanced, critical, and fair. ETHICS & AESTHETICS
At a moment marked by short attention spans, decentralized click-bait articles, and newspapers in flux, rethinking the aesthetics of our news websites feels just as crucial as re-imagining their published work. We want our work to resonate on its own merit, free of frivolity and flash, and grounded by a homepage that's striking in its radical simplicity. NO ADS / NO MASTERS
The Media prides itself on being free of advertisements. The current state of the media is bleak at best. Our project aims to push back and create a non-commercial webspace, detangled from the capitalist mess that is the mainstream media. This is an experiment fueled by the shared notion that an anti-corporate, anti-oppressive ethos must drive The Media. Some people will think we're being too idealistic. But perhaps they're not being idealistic enough. |
